  • Become a Literacy Ambassador

    Help inspire a lifelong love of reading in children throughout Cumberland County!

    The Cumberland County Literacy Council offers a variety of literacy programs for children from birth through elementary school. As a Literacy Ambassador, you'll have the opportunity to choose volunteer opportunities that fit your schedule and interests while making a lasting impact on young readers.

    Volunteer Opportunities

    📚 Imagination Library Storytimes (Ages 0–5)
    Lead or support interactive storytimes featuring books, songs, movement, and literacy-based activities at libraries and community locations.

    ☀️ Leap & Learn Summer Literacy Program (Elementary School)
    Help students strengthen their reading skills through engaging literacy activities designed to prevent summer learning loss.

    🎭 Page to Stage Literacy Program (Elementary School)
    Support students as they connect books with live theatre through interactive lessons, discussions, and hands-on learning experiences.

    🌟 Community Literacy Events
    Assist with family literacy nights, book distributions, author visits, festivals, and other special events that promote literacy across Cumberland County.

    Volunteer Requirements

    To ensure the safety and success of our programs, volunteers must:

    - Complete a volunteer application (Bloomerang Volunteer)
    - Pass a background check (required for volunteers working with children)
    - Complete Stewards of Children® child safety training

    Volunteer Roles

    📦 Program Support
    Help with setup and cleanup, welcome families, assist with registration, distribute materials, and support activities throughout the event or program.

    📖 Literacy Ambassador
    Engage children through storytelling, literacy activities, small-group learning, educational games, and reading support. Opportunities are available for both early childhood (ages 0–5) and elementary-aged students, depending on the program.

    💙 Make an Impact
    Whether you're reading a story, mentoring a young reader, or helping behind the scenes, every volunteer helps create meaningful literacy experiences that inspire children to become confident, lifelong readers.

    No previous teaching experience is required. We provide training, resources, and ongoing support to help you feel confident in every volunteer opportunity.
